When it Comes to Finding Meaning in Technology, Connection is Key

“The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives.” – Tony Robbins

scrabble tiles that spell out "contact", emphasizing the importance of connection.

As someone building software designed to bring people together, this quote hits close to home.

Technology often gets framed as a productivity tool—something that helps us move faster, automate processes, or manage information more efficiently. But the deeper purpose of the tools we build is communication. At its core, community software isn’t about features or dashboards. It’s about helping people connect, share ideas, ask questions, and support one another.

When communication breaks down, communities weaken. Members disengage. Opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and innovation quietly disappear. But when communication flows—when people feel heard, seen, and able to contribute—something powerful happens. Communities become ecosystems where people grow together.

That applies just as much inside a company as it does inside the communities we serve. As a CEO, I’m constantly reminded that leadership is largely about communication: how clearly I share my vision, how well I listen to my team, and even the conversations I have with myself matter deeply; when facing challenges or uncertainty, I have to understand the path forward before I can tell anyone else even the first step.

This internal dialogue matters more than we sometimes realize. The way leaders frame obstacles to themselves and to their teams shapes culture. If challenges are framed as roadblocks, or stop signs, organizations stall. If they’re framed as opportunities to learn and improve, teams move forward stronger. Failure has to be an option, as long as learning and growing, pivoting and continuing, are the next steps.

For organizations and associations, the same principle applies. The health of an association is directly tied to how well it enables communication among its members. Events, online communities, mentorship programs, and conversations between professionals all contribute to something deeper than information exchange: they create human connection. We live in a world hungry for real, meaningful, human to human connection!

In a world where people are increasingly overwhelmed by noise but starved for meaningful connection, that matters more than ever.

That’s why tools that make communication easier, more human, and more inclusive feels like meaningful work, at least to me. When people have an easier time communicating, with their peers, their communities, and themselves, the quality of their professional, and even their personal, lives improves.

And ultimately, so does the strength of the communities they belong to.
